Asia Pet Fair 2026: What We Learned About the Future of Pet Care

Reflections from a Tofu Cat Litter Manufacturer

A Sea of People, But a Shift in the Crowd

This year's Asia Pet Fair in Shanghai was, by every measure, a resounding success. Over 2,600 exhibitors spread across 320,000 square meters of exhibition space. The aisles were packed from opening to closing. But as we walked the floors, one observation kept surfacing: the crowd was overwhelmingly C-end — individual pet owners, not just trade visitors.

This is significant. It tells us that the Chinese pet market, now the second largest in the world, has matured. It is no longer driven solely by industry insiders buying and selling. It is driven by passionate consumers who care deeply about their pets and are willing to spend on quality.

For international brands considering entry into China, this is both an opportunity and a challenge. The consumers are educated, discerning, and vocal. They know what they want — and they are not afraid to switch brands if their expectations are not met.

International Pavilions: A Clear Signal

One of the most notable additions this year was the presence of dedicated international pavilions — the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Poland, and Thailand all brought delegations.

This sends a clear message: global brands are looking at China not as a sideline market, but as a primary growth driver. The competition is no longer just among local players. It is becoming a truly international playing field.

What does this mean for manufacturers and suppliers? It means we must raise our standards — not just to compete locally, but to earn the trust of global brands that demand consistency, transparency, and innovation.

The Innovation Paradox: Fewer Breakthroughs, Broader Scope

Walking through the halls, we noticed something surprising: there were very few truly new product categories.

The brands on display were largely offering the same staples — food, treats, beds, toys, grooming tools, litter. But the range within each category had expanded significantly. Pet products now cover every dimension of daily life: food, clothing, shelter, travel, health, entertainment, and beyond.

This is not a sign of stagnation. It is a sign of market saturation and refinement. When the basic categories are established, competition shifts to depth, quality, and lifestyle integration.

The message for international buyers: the Chinese market no longer needs "more." It needs "better." Better ingredients, better design, better sustainability, and better alignment with how people actually live with their pets.

The Real Theme of the Show: Human-Pet Co-Living

If there was one overarching theme at Asia Pet Fair 2026, it was this: the pet is no longer "just a pet."

Pets are now full members of the household. They sleep in the bed. They share the sofa. They accompany family meals. This was evident everywhere — from dedicated "human-pet lifestyle" exhibition zones to products like pet bike trailers, shared furniture, and premium litter box enclosures designed to blend into home decor.

This shift in mindset has profound implications for everyone in the pet industry. It is no longer enough to make a product that works for the pet. It must also work for the home — and for the people who share that home.

Odor, dust, noise, and visual clutter are no longer secondary concerns. They are the primary barriers to a harmonious shared life. Products that fail to address these pain points will find themselves increasingly sidelined. cat-2068462_1280.jpg

What This Means for Pet Product Manufacturers

As a manufacturer of tofu cat litter, we took these observations to heart. But the lessons apply broadly across the pet industry:

First, quality is no longer negotiable. In a market where consumers are educated and vocal, cutting corners is a losing strategy. The brands that win will be those that invest in superior ingredients, rigorous testing, and transparent supply chains.

Second, sustainability is moving from "nice to have" to "must have." The international pavilions at the show were not just displaying products — they were displaying values. Consumers worldwide, and especially in China's younger generations, are aligning their purchasing decisions with their environmental beliefs.

Third, the product is only half the story. The other half is how it fits into the user's life. A great cat litter that creates dust and tracking is no longer acceptable — because that dust ends up on the sofa, the dining table, and in the air the family breathes. A great pet bed that looks out of place in a modern living room will be passed over for one that complements the decor.

A Personal Reflection

Watching the crowds at Asia Pet Fair, we felt a sense of validation. The passion is real. The market is real. But we also felt a sense of responsibility.

As a manufacturer, we are not just producing a commodity. We are producing something that affects the daily quality of life for millions of households. The feedback we heard from visitors — both trade and consumer — reinforced our belief that the future of this industry lies in creating products that respect both the pet and the home.

For our international colleagues who were unable to attend, we hope these reflections are useful. The Chinese market is vast and dynamic, but it is also demanding and fast-changing. Success here requires not just a great product, but a deep understanding of how pets and people are living together — and how we can make that life better.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 Asia Pet Fair has come to an end. But in the meantime, the work continues — in our factory, in our R&D lab, and in our conversations with partners around the world.

We are excited about what lies ahead. The global pet industry is evolving rapidly, and China is at the center of that evolution. Whether you are a brand, an importer, or a distributor, we would welcome the opportunity to exchange ideas and explore how we can grow together in this dynamic market.
